  1. When I got out of the Navy back in 1995 I bought a computer and started using the local BBS (bulletin board system). It was a virtual community gathering place, with chat rooms, file downloads, and online games. This was sort of a mini-Internet, back before the Internet really took off. Even back then, everyone had an alias or “handle” that they were known by.

My first alias was “Cool Cat”, sort of a morphing of my nickname in the Navy which was “El Gato” (Spanish for “The Cat”). When I started playing Doom and Duke Nukem online I changed my handle to Skillet. Skillet, or Home Skillet, was the name my buddy Dave Finn would call you if he didn’t know or couldn’t remember your name. I liked it, so I took it.

Through the years “Skillet” has stuck. It’s been my online persona through all my video gaming and chat rooms and jobs–just about everything I’ve done on the Internet in the last 10 years or so.
