Get 'er done

I’ve got a bad case of senioritis.

The weather has been absolutely gorgeous up here in Chico this month. The majority of the days have been in the high 70s low 80s with clear skies and hardly any wind. It’s so nice I just want to be outside all the time.

I’m also getting closer and closer to graduating. As I’m typing this, I have 7 weeks of instruction and 1 week of finals left. I’m so close I can’t believe it. I never thought it would happen. Neither, for that matter, did anyone else.

Since I decided to go back to school I’ve gotten mixed reactions. The camps seem to be divided between those who have graduated from college, and those who have not.

The haves have been very supportive. They have encouraged me, inspired me. They stress how important my education is. These people include my parents, sisters, and various friends with degrees. They are very interested in my major, what I’m learning, what my classes are.

The people who have not graduated from college regularly ask me, “What the fuck are you doing up there?” They want to know why I’m not working full time. They show not the slightest interest in my studies. They hint that what I’m doing is a waste of time. “Liberal studies: focus Computer Science, minor in History? What can you do with that?”

Support is nice. The others bother me. At a recent non-degree friends party I announced that I was graduating in May, finally after all these years. They made no response. When I asked if anyone wanted to come to my graduation ceremony… silence. Is it jealousy? I’m not sure. It hurts a bit.

Anyway, that feeling soon passes. I am so excited about graduating I feel like peeing my pants. So what if I’m 32 years old? I’m educated. And that feels fucking great.

Now to get my ass to class. I’ve been hanging out on my porch too much lately; drinking coffee, smoking cigars, and reading in the sun…

  1. Congrats on being so close! Chalk me up in the “never thought it would happen” camp. Tumbleweeds don’t get degrees!

Senioritis, eh? Seems my last semester before graduation, I wanted nothing more than to blast every test and every assignment out of the ballpark… and I did.

The whole grads/non-grads thing should make you think a bit. About what, I don’t know, but it’s an interesting case study. How is their quality of life? Do you like their attitudes? Do all/most of the people in each group have similar outlooks and stuff? It could be a good gauge of where you’re going… then again it could mean jack shit because all people are different.

What was the point of any of this I am about to post?

  2. Stay in college as long as possible Tom! Get another degree.
A college diploma does wonders for the ole sense of accomplishment. Congratz. A diploma will also lead to $$$ – maybe. National survey said those with diplomas averaged 42% more money than non-degrees. Heard that somewhere?
For me education is an ongoing process. I think that is the division between the two camps. Those who keep on learning and those who don’t.

get er’ done muu ha haa haa i do feel for you tho – having to take those semester exams – what a pain in the ass.

  3. But wait there is more. My college is changing over to University status. Gonna send in for my new diploma that reads Shpeherd University! lol
